The lot features an exceptional Sioux Native American Indian fully quilled hair drop from the 19th Century. This third to fourth quarter hair drop shows an Indian tanned parfleche hide construction with red ocher mineral painted back surface and completely quilled front. The quill work is all period correct porcupine quills with mineral polychrome dyed colors of blue/black and red. The drop shows two Thunderbird effigy fetish figures with a geometric pattern. The base of the roach shows ten hide fringe pieces that are completely wrapped in quillwork and finished with an original rolled tin jingle cone accented by white horse hair. The piece shows two loops which flow into four pieces of 14-inch-long fringe that are completely wrapped in quill work and end in two rolled tin jingle cones and white horse hair. The piece is in fine preserved museum quality condition. Provenance: The piece was found to be an authentic Sioux piece from the 19th Century by the experts at Skinners Auction where it was sold to a very prominent Billings, Montana collector. One of the finest 1800’s quilled hair drop roaches known to exist. Quilled Hair Drops are exceedingly rare with some examples selling for $3,000 at the Altermann Galleries and Auctioneers 8/17/2006 and Cowan’s 4/4/2009 sale for $2,375. The piece measures 2" x 16".
