Sioux Cowry Shell Large Woman's Dress 20th C.
The lot features a circa mid-to-late 20th Century cowry shell beaded dress from the Sioux Native American Indians. The dress shows a heavy dark blue woolen trade clothe construction with piped edge in a linear trade clothe and covered along chest, back and arms (of both sides) in number two wampum, cowry shells. Wampum can be referred to as as beaded adornment along the cape or shoulders of a woman's dress and is listed in age denotation as follows; number one wampum is a dentalium shell, number two cowry shell and number three can either be a Czechoslovakian bugle bead or cylindrical barrel shell bead. Wampum shells were also used as a currency, the more wampum the higher your status. This dress has a green fleece lining which would put it as being either altered in later years or from the late reservation to early powwow years circa 1950-1990's. The dress is sewn with a sinew or sinew like material and is well preserved in good condition. The piece measures 50"L by 58"W from arm to arm.
