Sioux City, IA - $100 1882 Brown Back Fr. 524 The First NB Ch. # (M)1757
This lovely $100 Brown Back was one of Tom's last acquisitions, having been obtained in March of 2006. The census now shows just about 300 $100 Brown Backs from all banks and states combined, with an even dozen known from the Hawkeye state. This is one of two such examples known from this bank, and the only one to be offered at public sale during the last three decades. It's signed as President by legendary Iowa banker James F. Toy, who, starting in Storm Lake in 1876, owned and operated over a dozen different banks, with this Sioux City institution the center of his banking empire, which later included the Toy National Bank, also located in Sioux City. This is a lovely note which has everything a collector might desire, including vivid print quality, sharp two color signatures, wide even margins, and great eye appeal. Tom paid $9775 to acquire this prize, and we expect it will be worth no less tonight. Very Fine+.
From The Thomas M.
