The lot features an original Sioux Native American Indian beaded stone head war club skull cracker (skullcracker) dating to circa 1890. The piece shows an expertly carved stone head that is secured to the wood haft with a heavy Buffalo rawhide parfleche wrap. At the top of the stone head shows the remnants of a sinew wrapped drop of eagle feathers, which were removed due to current laws and regulations, a true attribution of the pieces early age. The haft is wrapped in the same Buffalo parfleche rawhide which covers the entire handle surface. The haft is also adorned with three sections of period correct traditional geometric linear beaded design. The beadwork is done on an Indian tanned hide with the two lower sections having hand cut fringe at the ends of the beadwork. The beadwork shows a liner design with all period correct glass trade seed beads of chalk white, greasy yellow semi-transparent translucent red, and medium green. At the base of the gripping area shows a drop of beadwork in the typical triangular Indian tanned hide construction showing a geometric pattern of beadwork. The beadwork shows a strong triangular pattern with Buffalo track symbols and is all glass trade seed beads of medium green, greasy yellow and red. The entire war club tomahawk is covered in a red pigment mineral ocher paint dye including the head, haft and beaded drop. The pie shows an original museum or collection tag that is hand marked, “B-562 / DJJJ”. Provenance: From a large Native American weapons and beadwork collection in Great Falls, Montana. Measures overall 29”L from the top of the head to the bottom of the fringe. The war club is 19”L with a 4.25”W x 2 5/8”H x 2.5”D.
