The lot features a wonderful fully front beaded Sioux Native American Indian knife sheath with an exceedingly rare original J. Russell & Co. Green River Works Bowie knife. The knife shows the "J. Russell & Co. Green River Works" hallmark parallel with the hilt. John Russell founded his namesake cutlery circa early 1830's and by 1836 he moved the factory location to the Green River Massachusetts area. A fire delayed the factories success, but by circa 1840 with the help of Henry Clapp the factory was rebuilt and christened the "Green River Works" with all knives produced here hallmarked, "J. Russell & Co. Green River Works." This knife dates to post 1840 in the 19th century and is truly an excellent piece. The knife shows a unique bowie knife design with silver like hilt, bone handles having brass rivets. The sheath shows an immensely detailed and museum quality construction with Indian tanned hide covering a Parfleche rawhide base, all sinew sewn. The beadwork across the front shows all 19th century glass trade seed beads in sky blue, semi-transparent red, medium green, chalk white, greasy yellow, semi-transparent blue, Cheyenne pink. The sheath also shows a braided top strap and fully rope beaded long Indian tanned hide drop. Sheath is 27"L overall x 3 7/8"W. Knife is 13"L with an 8.25"x1.75" blade. The sheath has been professionally restored. The knife shows overall good condition with a slight bend in the blade. Civil War Era, Gold Rush Era, Westward Expansion Era. RARE.
