This is an exceptional Sioux Plains Indian beaded model tipi dating to the 19th Century. The piece is complete showing an Indian brain tanned hide which is sinew sewn over an original bent wood frame with miniature lodge pole frame which is also sinew rawhide sewn and is accented by sinew sewn drops of early red trade cloth wool stroud strips and round fur medallions which are mineral red ocher painted. The tipi is complete with the flap poles at the rear and the front tipi tie pegs and the door flap. The piece is covered with various traditional geometric period correct early glass trade seed 19th Century “Cen” beads done in cobalt, semi-transparent rose, and light blue (with a total of five round medallions and a linier design on the door). This is truly a wonderful authentic example of a Sioux Plains Tipi (also referred to as a Tepee or Teepee). Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. The hide has been wonderfully preserved and shows fine condition for its early age with the beadwork showing little to no loss and displays very well. Early tipi child’s models are highly collectible with such examples selling at auction for $24,000 at the Skinner 2/11/2013 sale, $5,036 at Skinners 9/26/2009 sale, $9,600 at Christie's 2006 sale, and the Sioux Model Tipi cover for $2,200 in NAAC’s 6/8/2019 sale. Measures overall 16”H x 12.5” diameter.
