The lot features an exceptional fully top beaded moccasins on hide with hard soles from the Sioux Native American Indians dating to circa 1860-1880’s. The set shows an Indian tanned buckskin hide construction with sinew sewing and parfleche rawhide Buffalo hide hard soles. The tops show glass trade seed beads in a “Buffalo Tongue” or “Buffalo Track” pattern in striking colors of medium green, cobalt, sky padre blue, red, butterscotch yellow, cobalt, greasy green and greasy blue. Buffalo Track or Tongue pattern is a well-documented used Sioux 19th Century pattern with this being a fine example. The hide shows some slight warping on the bottom left side of the right moccasin, likely from much honest use and age. The set shows a set of short tongues with tie straps included. One of the finest sets of Indian Wars era moccasins with little to no bead loss. Provenance: From the ex-collection of wealthy American Indian collector Cyrus Eaton of London, England. Each measures 10 ½ inches long by 4 inches across. The set is stuffed with old newspaper clippings and clothe to keep their shape and prevent degradation of the hide.
