Sioux Ball Head War Club
Sioux Ball Head War Club
Circa 1850
Length 33 in.

This relatively large war club is gracefully carved with the pleasing proportions so characteristic of the form. The wood club is decorated with brass upholstery tacks on both sides of the handle, around the ball head, and along the inner and outer edges. The grip is wrapped with a wool braid.
The ball head club was well known throughout the Eastern Woodlands, Great Lakes and Prairie. It was a formidable weapon, highly effective in hand-to-hand combat. This club compares favorably with an example in the Denver Art Museum collections, no doubt made by the same hand.
