Single shot percussion dueling/target pistol signed J. M. Happoldt and son, Charleston SC in fancy script engraved letters on lock. 8-1/4” heavy octagon barrel measuring nearly 7/8” across the flat of the muzzle. Approx. .41 caliber smooth bore, half-stocked in good quality walnut showing flattened sides in typical checkering with distinctive border. The pistol shows a grey to brown patina finish with strong traces of case hardening on the light. Some light to moderate erosion on the lock and some slightly heavier pitting on the forward end of muzzle. The stock is good to very good with some darkening from oil and handling. The checkering is good and some small dings and mars. There are some dents and scratches around the barrel key escutcheons. The action is good. Happoldt family worked in Charleston, South Carolina and their pistols are actively sought by southern arms collectors, and about a dozen are known. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $3,000 - $6,000
