Singin' in the Rain (MGM, 1952). Window Card (14" X 22"). When the accolades rain, they pour, and this Gene Kelly vehicle shows no drought of praise. Named among the best musicals, the reputation of the film has only grown, and it's now regarded among the best films ever. Incredibly, the script was inspired by pre-existing songs -- like an action film written around the stunt sequences -- but somehow the writing holds up just as well as the songs. Betty Comden and Adolph Green crafted a self-reflexive ode to Hollywood that takes the industry's conversion to sound as its setting. Every performer from Kelly to clown-prince Donald O'Connor then elevates the merriment and music to dizzyingly transcendent levels, a satire set free from cynicism. This window card invites the viewer to celebrate the storm with Kelly and O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds and colors that still sing. The card has tanned and had a snipe removed from the top border, but the edges are free of tears and other wear. Fine/Very Fine.
