Diameter 16 in.

The lid of this large burial urn is topped with a seated female figure holding a cup. The rendering of the fingers of both hands is most unusual, looking more like attached ornaments than integral body components. The head and general body treatment suggest a middle Magdalena River valley origin. The incised geometric designs on the sides of the lid continue onto the shoulder of the urn itself. These have been filled with white pigment. The domed lid was shattered into thirteen pieces, which have been reassembled with some filling. The top of the head has repairs and the ears of the figure are abraded from insertion of ear ornaments. There is minor cracking on the left of the torso. The bottom one-fourth of the urn has water staining and encrustations.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, 9 June 2003, lot 5028, p.10
