In 1771, believing he had killed a man, he fled westward, assuming the name Simon Butler. He settled in Boonesboro, Kentucky, in 1775 and defended the settlement against frequent Native American attacks; in one of these encounters he saved Daniel Boone's life. During the American Revolution he accompanied (1778) George Rogers Clark on his expedition to Kaskaskia and Vincennes and helped Boone in the raid on Chillicothe. He was later captured by the Native Americans, who brought him to the British in Detroit, but he escaped (1779) and again joined Clark as a scout. Learning that the man he thought he had killed was alive, he resumed his original name, and eventually settled (1799) in Ohio. Kenton was elected a brigadier general of militia in 1804 and served in the War of 1812 at the battle of the Thames.

The document reads in full, "Know all men by these presents that we Simon Kenton and John Kenton are held and firmly bound unto William Wood, in the Instance full sum of two hundred and forty dollars to the which payment will and truly be made we bind ourselves and heirs Exors and Admons douilly [sic] and Severally firmly by these presents sealed without seals and dated the 13th day of May 1800. the condition of the above obligations such that whereas the above bound Simon Kenton hath prayed an appeal to the Court of Appeals from a Judgment of the Court of Quarter Sessions for Mason County in favour of William Wood in a Certain Action of Ejecuturant, now if the said Simon Kenton shall prosecute his appeal to effect or pay to the said William Woodale costs and damage that have accrued oj may accrue in the consequence of said appeal, there the above obligation to be void else to remain in foil force and virtue."
