Lincoln's controversial first secretary of war (1799–1889), who served only one year before resigning amidst allegations of corruption. Civil War–dated ALS, one page, 6 x 7.75, July 26, 1863. In part: "I send my endorsement of your letter to Mr. Stanton. It will be sufficient I think to make application to Gen. Schenck." Mounted, double-matted, and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 25.25 x 16.5. In very good to fine condition, with several vertical folds and a few small ink stains. An interesting letter considering Camereon's reference to his successor as secretary of war, Edwin M. Stanton.
