Lincoln’s controversial first secretary of war (1799–1889). ALS, one page both sides, 8 x 10, April 5, 1829. Letter to J. D. Barnam concerning a letter of recommendation, in part: ”He has written to me to–day saying that he has not yet succeeded and praying me to obtain a letter from you on his behalf. There is no particular reason why I should interest myself in his behalf but as he is poor and honest and capable…I cannot help feeling some anxiety for his success. He worked in my office some years ago and was warm and active for Jackson when…friends were few.” Affixed to a slightly larger presentation sheet. Addressed on the second integral page in his own hand. In very good to fine condition, with tape repairs to horizontal folds, and a strip of tape along separated hinge.
