Bird's eye view of the former mining town. Cabinet card measures 6 1/2”x4 1/8”, beige single matte 7”x4 1/2”, medium contrast—suffers from some yellowing, and the focus is sharp. This selection is part of William H. Jackson's Rocky Mountain Scenery photos. The town is situated between the San Juan Range and La Plata Mountains. Prior to 1873, the area was off limits for white settlement due to U. S. treaties with the Ute Nation. After 1873, when Ute Chief Ouray and the U. S. signed the Brunot Treaty allowing mining in the San Juan Mountains, prospectors came and brought with them all the businesses and opportunity that accompanies successful mining towns [REF: http://www.suite101.com/content/chief-ouray-was-a-big-part-of-the-history-of-colorado-a236975]. Silverton was established in 1874 and was known for being a rough and tough place. By the middle 1880s, it boasted over 3,000 inhabitants.
