Carbonate 1890. This is a RARE gold-mining artifact! Stamped on top: "SILVER LEAD, BULLION, CARPONATE 1890." This 3-pound bar was made in the HISTORIC MINING TOWN OF CARBONATE, South Dakota (near the home of the famous HOMESTAKE GOLD MINE of Lead, SD). Currently a ghost town, it began mining in 1881and had peaked in 1885. By 1892 it was played out, due to silver being down & an epidemic of diphtheria which struck down the town. The side of the bar has been marked with a history of what and how much was being mined in CARBONATE at that time: Silver 300 oz/Ton, Gold 1/2 oz/Ton. Est. 300-650
