Silver Streak Comics #1 Pay Copy pedigree (Lev
Silver Streak Comics #1 Pay Copy pedigree (Lev Gleason, 1939) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Cream to off-white pages. One of the most coveted comic books from the Golden Age of Comics, this historical issue, with its metallic cover, is also one of the most striking. Jack Cole's cover introduced the Claw, the grotesque super-villain who would bedevil Daredevil (yet to be introduced in comics) in the years to come. This was publisher Lev Gleason's first comic book and would enjoy a run of three years before becoming Crime Does Not Pay. Gerber's assessment of "uncommon" seems conservative; in fact, Overstreet's "scarce" rating may be understated, considering only two unrestored copies appear in CGC's census to date. So far, this is the highest grade CGC has awarded for the issue, and the brilliant cover colors of our copy attest to that. Lloyd Jacquet's Funnies Inc. was a packaging house similar to the Eisner Studios, and was responsible for creating this comic. Jacquet had his own staff who packaged books for both Timely and Lev Gleason. He wrote the paycheck for the pencilers, writers, inkers and he would choose one example of each book he published to record the notes regarding who worked on book, how much they were paid, and the check number. One artist who was published by both Timely and Lev Gleason was Bill Everett, creator of the Sub-Mariner. In fact, the inside back cover of this book carries an ad for Timely's Marvel Mystery Comics #2...perhaps the first ever example of cross-company advertising. Check out your copy of Marvel Mystery #2 and you will also see an ad for Silver Streak Comics #1. Just a few years ago, the prestigious Jacquet Pay Copy of Marvel Comics #1 (also a 9.0) fetched $350,000, making it the most money ever paid for a comic book to date. Sure to be one of the most prized of all books purchased in our auction, this is the first time this treasure has been offered publicly. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $10,500; NM 9.4 value = $14,000. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
