A pretty sterling silver snuff box, with an engraved soldier on horseback on the lid. He appears to beholding a telescope or a baton on one outstretched hand. The sides of the box are bevelled round, with embossed work of scrolls. Inside is gilt-washed. Both inside lid and inside lower box are hallmarked, also with the sovereign?s head, and the maker?s mark ?N & R?. (Wyler attributes this to Neville & Ryland, with a question mark). Date letter is for Birmingham 1839.
Excellent condition. Measures 12.5 mm thick, 70 mm long by 43 mm deep (1/2 inch thick, 2.3/4 inches long by 1.3/4 inches deep). Weight is approx. 60 grms.
