Silver Railroad Pass 1892; Otto Mears Silver Railroad Pass 1892
Silver Railroad Pass 1892 An intricate and gorgeous silver ticket which was stamped and presented to Mrs. J.W. Gilluly, in 1892. The two railroads mentioned on the pass are the Rio Grande Southern, and the Silverton. The Rio Grande Southern was a narrow gauge mountain railroad (3ft gauge) in southwestern Colorado which ran from Durango to Ridgeway. With a track distance of 163 miles it ran through the rugged Rocky Mountains. It was one of Otto Mears' railroads which served the Silverton mining district. The Silverton Railroad was also known as the Rainbow Route, and pierced the heart of the mighty San Juan Mountains. These railroads served the mining communities and therefore did not have a long life. But Otto Mears was a shrewd businessman and he treated his customers with great care. These silver railroad passes were just an example of the treatment his regulars received. This 1892 filigree version is extremely desirable due to its delicate and ornate appearance. It comes complete with its serial number and original leather case! A fantastic piece of railroadiana!
