Curved double fuller blade, 34 1/2 inches long, with the Clauberg trademark on the left ricasso, panels of scroll etching on either side, "U.S." in a panel on the left and American Eagle with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner on the reverse. Gilt finished silver hilt, pierced-through guard with floral designs, raised American Eagle with stand of flags, and a floral rear quillion, floral twist patterns on the knuckle guard, a bust of medusa on the back strap, oak leaf pommel and a silver and engraved silver grip. Sheath with silver fittings, showing raised arrays of arms and flags on the suspension bands, 3-dimensional soldiers on the tip, and the crude period inscription "to/ Capt. Thomas M. Bowen/ 11 Kansas Cavalry/ 1862" between the bands. Thomas Mead Bowen (1835-1906) was born in the Michigan Territory (near what would later be Burlington, Iowa), became a lawyer and member of the Iowa House of Representatives before moving to Kansas, where he would join the 11th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry as a Captain during the Civil War. During the War he was promoted to Colonel and breveted to Brigadier General. Following the War Bowen moved to Arkansas, and during his time there would serve as a State Supreme Court Justice, and spend one week as the Governor of Idaho by Presidential appointment. Moving on to the Colorado Territory, Bowen served as a judge after statehood was granted, was elected to the State House and then to the United States Senate from 1883 to 1889. After his Congressional terms, Bowen returned to private life in Pueblo, Colorado, where he later died and was buried.

Condition: Very fine as once period cleaned, with some light spotting and handling marks on the blade, with a mixed dark patina on the silver components and some frosting and spotting of the steel. Traces of gilt remain in the protected areas. Bald is fine as cleaned with sharp original etching remaining. An attractive sword overall.
