Silver Mount & Bronze Moroccan Jambiya c. 20th C
For your consideration is this beautifully crafted bronze and silver mounted Moroccan Jambiya dagger circa early/mid 1900s. A jambiya, also known as a shibriyeh in the Levant, is a specific type of dagger with a short curved blade with a medial ridge that originated from Yemen that have spread throughout the Middle East, the Arab world and parts of Southeast Asia. Each region has its own differences in the curvature of the blade; the Jordanian shibriyeh is typically not curved unlike the Yemeni jambiya. The jambiya handle often tells of the social status of the man who wears it. This jambiya is constructed of bronze and silver mounting. The silver mount is visible on the sheath and is highly decorated with intricate geometric designs throughout. The reverse side of the sheath shows the bronze layer and silver mount designs on the bottom, middle and top. Two loops are on the sheath used to attach the dagger to a belt or garments. The black painted wood handle shows silver mounting and bronze accents throughout with intricate geometric designs. The blade shows a slight curve and two notches, one on each side of the blade, showing where the sharpening and grinding would take place. The jambiya dagger shows good condition overall with slight wear and light patina present from its age and handling over the years, but no signs of major damage or wear is present. The jambiya dagger measures 16" L x 3 3/4" W x 5/8" D and weighs 8 ounces
