Featured in this lot is a beautifully ornate Dutch display spoon. The spoon is 7 5/8" long x 1 3/4" wide at the bowl. The bowl features repousse work with an unusual Dutch windmill/ barn and a tree on either side; in the foreground is a field of grass and a fence perhaps. In the upper right of the bowl is a Passant lion and the number 2 (silver fineness .833) in a hexagon. On the back of the bowl is what is perhaps the maker's mark. The shoulders of the spoon have decoration seeming to depict some winged creature. The handle features a twist pattern. toward the bottom are 3 x's, the significance of which is unknown. Directly above is a single calligraphy "X", which is the date stamp. It indicates that this piece was made in 1907. Above the twist in the stem is what appears to be either a bowed ribbon or ram's horns, on the back of which is engraved the letter "D". This is believed to be an assay city code, which would indicate the piece to have been assayed in Rotterdam. Finally, the finial portrays two angels standing on the very top of a column and holding up a 3D, three mast Dutch galleon. The galleon is under full sail and has four flags. The spoon is a really neat piece with great patina.
