Silver Commemorative Medal for the German Academy for Aeronautical Research

Established in 1936 on orders from Hermann Goering, the German Academy for Aeronautical Research was an elite think tank, with the Commemorative Medal doubling as a membership badge and indicator of rank within the Academy. The silver badge was intended for "Supporting" members, the second tier of the Academy, intended to number 100 but never reaching that number before the Academy reached it's end. Members received 2 versions of the medal appropriate to their rank; a larger pin-back medal in the style of a Luftwaffe qualification badge, or a lapel pin, like this one. Measuring 1 3/4 inches across, the medal bears an eagle carrying a swastika, similar to the one on the Luftwaffe pilot badge, outlined with a hollow oak leaf wreath. The rear of the medal is marked "81", "900" and "LN/1700". The medal is suspended from a stick pin, decorated with 3 oak leaves at the top.
