Virginia Mining District. Incorporated in Nevada Territory. Cert. #61, issued to Charles Hosmer for 10 shares. Signed by Jno. B. Winters, president, and by Wm. B. Hickok, secretary. A small stag vignette is at bottom center. Black border and print. Applied 25ct. revenue stamp is at left edge. Uncancelled. Printer: Towne & Bacon, S.F. this mine is not listed on the Becker map of 1883. John Winters’ biography is long. To summarize briefly, he ran for Congress in 1864 and for the Senate in 1867, and lost both elections. In 1860 he built a mill with Woodworth and Mosheimer on the Carson River [DeGroot] and also owned a small mine in the Silver Lake District in the Pine Nut Mountains in Lyon County [Angel]. He is not to be confused with John D. Winters. Wm. Hickok was a “speculator” in Silver City in 1863 [Kelley], and also a mining engineer of national repute. He was a delegate to the Nevada State Constitutional Convention in 1863, and was nominated both as State Treasurer and for the State Senate [Angel]. Hosmer, the purchaser of this certificate, is also the purchaser of the above Tennessee Gold & Silver Mining Co. stock in Esmeralda County.
