Silver-Bound Dess Gottseeligen... Johann Arndt
(Silver Binding) Johann Arndt: Des Gottseeligen und Hoch-erleuchteten Lehrers Johann Arndt Paradies-Gaertlein Welches Christlichen Jugend-Gebete erfuellet. (Ulm, 1722), 1722 edition, 518 pages, seven engravings, bound in silver, narrow 12mo. Title page in red and black, engraved frontispiece and other fine engravings, endpapers are hand-blocked Dutch paper. An unusually delicate, yet elaborate silver repousse binding. The backstrip centers an angel against a chased background within a mitred panel, intertwined ribbon scrolls and floral drops in repousse complement the design in geometrical sequence, a basket of flowers at foot of spine and child's head at top bring the design into focus within a border of dots and thread rules. On the front cover a symbolic feminine figure holding a cross, and with a lamb at her feet, is the focal point of the elaborate design of interlaced ribbons and floral sprays, all in repousse. The figure is most beautifully modeled, as is the shell and head that tie the design at the top of the cover. The rear cover centers a symbolic feminine figure holding an anchor posed against a background of a stylized sea and a small boat. The supporting design duplicates that of the front cover. The clasps are beautifully chased with sprays and dots and thread borders and are in perfect working order. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
