Artist: Xavier Martinez (1869-1943). Title/Description: Large silhouettes: Henry Anderson Lafler, Perry H. Newberry, with Bertha Newberry ("Butsky") verso (3 works on two sheets). Signature: Unsigned. Date Created: c. 1900s-1910s. Medium/Ground: Watercolor/wash on paper. Size: approx. 24 3/4in x 18 3/4in; and 24in x 18 3/4in. Condition: Both with foxing, toning, edge tears/losses; one with large tear/loss at right margin. Henry Anderson Lafler (1878-1935). Lafler was a poet, author, editor, and Bohemian Club member. He was part of Xavier Martinez's artistic, Coppa's Restaurant circle of friends, the Crowd, which included Newberry, Herman Whitaker, Ambrose Bierce, George Sterling, and James Hopper. Perry Harmon Newberry (1870-1938). Newberry was a newspaper editor, writer, and artist. He was a friend of Lafler and the rest of the Bohemian/Coppa's Restaurant Crowd, including Herman Whitaker and Xavier Martinez, and one of the original denizens of Carmel Art Colony. Of his wife Bertha's nickname, "Butsky", Elsie Martinez explained that she was "...the only woman smoker in the group, she was always running out of cigarettes..." and hunting for butts (San Francisco Bay Area Artists and Writers, Bancroft Library 1962-1969:212).
