Signed Photograph of Lord Kitchener
Signed Photograph of Lord Kitchener in Full Military Dress. Black and white photo, 10" x 14", np, nd. This handsome photograph is mounted to its presentation board, which is inscribed by Kitchener "In remembrance of your kindness during my very pleasant visit to New York. Kitchener." Matted to a board and framed to an overall size of 18" x 22". At the outset of World War I, he was considered the "Last Best Hope for British Victory". Lord Kitchener was appointed Secretary of State for War. Against cabinet opinion, Kitchener correctly predicted a long war that would last at least three years, require huge new armies to defeat Germany, and suffer enormous casualties before it's end. On June 5, 1916, Lord Kitchener boarded the HMS Hampshire en route to Russia on a diplomatic mission. At Scapa Flow, just a short distance from shore, in waters under British control, a mine laid by the German submarine U-75 claimed Kitchener, his staff, and 643 crew members. His body was never found.
