Signed Framed Hirschfeld Phoenix Lithograph Art Print
This original lithograph is by the "Line King" - Al Hirschfeld (U.S. 1903 - 2003). It was a part of a series of ads that Al Hirschfeld created for the CBS Play of the Week. In 1960, off-set lithographs like this one were given to CBS employees as Christmas gifts. Hirschfeld hid his daughter's name (NINA) in many of his prints. See if you can find it below! "CBS Play of the Week: The Phoenix Players in Henry IV, 1960" Lithograph on etching paper Signed by the artist in ink, LR Also signed in the plate, LR Framed size: 17 × 21 Image showing under mat is about 11¾ × 15 Print appears pristine; has not been examined outside of its frame Frame is in excellent condition - and very appropriate for the print Certificate of Authenticity from Midwest Estate BuyersAccording to Bob Staake, author of The Complete Book of Caricature, "For over 8 decades, Hirschfeld came to embody caricature innovation with an insight, vision and command of technique that elevated the art from the slavish (historically accepted) act of graphic buffoonery to interpretive expressionism. From motion pictures to television, theater to the arts, your celebrity stock rose when you found yourself the lucky subject of a Hirschfeld caricature, and while there were notable exceptions, few celebrities drawn by the master ever bristled at his interpretation of them, the artist's distinct style so elegant, so breathless, that negativism found it nearly impossible to seep forth from his intrinsically decorative artwork."
