An original painting oil on canvas, in its original frame. This is thought to be an early work of Barchus showing Mount Rainier. The painting is 11 1/2 inches high x 17 1/2 inches wide; the frame is 16 1/4 inches high x 22 1/4 inches wide.

Eliza Barchus painted Mt. Rainier almost as often as Mt. Hood and Mt. Shasta. These three mountains were her "bread-and-butter" paintings. She had a strong natural ability to paint and her career ultimately spanned 50 years. The earliest exhibition record of her work is at the Seventh Annual Portland Mechanics Exposition in 1885. On December 31, 1959, after just reaching the age of 102, Eliza Barchus passed away from pneumonia.

Over the last thirty years Barchus’ works have been steadily receiving more interest and their values have been increasing. Her works justifiably are becoming recognized as a significant legacy to Oregon’s early art history.
