Prominent Virginia Senator, 1860 Presidential candidate, Confederate Secretary of State, Confederate President pro tem, met with Lincoln as one of peace commissioners. Jas. Alfred Pearce, "Maryland." Whig Rep. and Senator. John Mason, "Virginia." Sec. of Navy under Tyler and Polk, Attorney General. Geo. E. Badger "of North Carolina." Sec. of Navy under Harrison and Tyler, nominated to U.S. Supreme Court but not confirmed. John S. Henderson, with close of letter in his hand. Enlisted in Confederate Army as Private, longtime postwar Rep. from North Carolina. Lewis Williams. Early Rep. from N.C., serving from 1815-42, nicknamed "Father of the House." With two lines in his hand. E.E. Settle. Rep. from Kentucky, serving only 1897-99, delegate to 1888 Convention nominating Cleveland. P(inckney) D. Bowles, "Evergreen, Ala." Dated in pencil on verso Oct. 30, 1901. Two signatures of this Confederate General, fought under Stonewall Jackson, led his unit at Gettysburg, appointed Brig. Gen. April 2, 1865. Uniform toning, else both very fine. Chas W. Jones, "Florida." Irish-born carpenter turned Sen. (1834-97), moved from New York to the South. John Sharp Williams, Sen. from Mississippi 1911-23, "with wishes for health & happiness..." on note card of Ellis Robb, Atlanta. Delegate to 1912 Convention nominating Woodrow Wilson. Dated 1928 in another hand.
