The tone of Freud’s message is nonchalant and reveals none of the “health reasons” that prevented his journey, as 1923 was the year he was diagnosed with cancer of the jaw. It was also the year, however, that Freud was surely in demand after introducing new terms to describe the division between the conscious and unconscious mind: “ id,” “ego,” and “super ego”—terminology he thought described the dynamic relations between the two minds.
