Sierra City, Loyalton,CA - Sierra County - 1900 - Logging and Mining Scene Photographs (2) :
The first photograph measures 9 ¼’’ x 8 ½’’ on a tan matte. Medium contrast and focus is okay. White spots appear in center in the upper part of the photograph. The edges are very slightly worn. A small crease can be seen on the upper right corner. Photographer and date unknown. Shows two men standing in the front of a building located in a mining camp. Logs and chairs are scattered around the building. Sierra City started as a trading center for the surrounding mining areas. An avalanche destroyed the small community in 1852, but was rebuilt by the Reis brothers when they developed the famous Sierra Buttes mines. The second photo measures 10 ½’’x 6 ½’’ on grey matte. Medium to low contrast and focus is sharp. Photographer is listed as Thompson, who was present in Loyalton in 1906. Two water marks appear on the upper and lower right corners. Freckling appears in the left side as well. There is slight wear on the edges of the matte. Photo shows a man and two children near a carriage that is pulling lumber. Originally named Smiths Neck, Loyalton was renamed in 1864. The new name was suggested by the town’s first postmaster, Rev, Adam G. Doom. Doom believed the original name of the town was expressive of the local Union sentiments. It later became a place of logging and ranching [Gudd G. Erwin. California Gold Camps. University of California Press. Berkeley. 1975].
