Sid Check and Frank Frazetta - Original Art for Black Cat Mystery #50, Complete 5-page Story, "Here Today... " (Harvey, 1954). Alex Acevedo of the Alexander Gallery unearthed this rare story from the vaults of the Harvey warehouse in the summer of 2001. This is a complete 5-page story that appeared in Black Cat Mystery #50 and features Sid Check doing the layouts and pencils. Frank Frazetta came in to help him finish the job with inks. The hand of Frazetta is easily seen in the strong facial characterizations throughout the story and the touches of action that all bear the Frazetta approach. During this same time period, Frazetta also did the inking over Check's pencils on the cover to Beware #10. Sadly, this original art is not known to exist. Frazetta made these comments:"I don't remember that much about Sid Check. I only knew him for a few weeks. Now that you mention him I do recall helping him on several stories and, I believe, a cover of some sort. I don't remember the specific comic or year although I remember inking a horror story of some kind. That was so long ago. You have to remember that I helped out a lot of guys during those days. Everybody did some inking on last-minute deadline jobs as favors to friends, or to make a little extra money. If you look carefully at the faces, or scenes with action, you can usually see where I was inking. My stuff is easy to notice if you know where to look. I never tried to change someone else's lines if I was inking them. Sometimes there would be areas that needed my approach, and these were left open for me to do what I wanted. I was often asked to ink the faces. I enjoyed giving the faces some unique character. It was easy to ink Williamson because we both loved the fine line approach. I think Check had a heavier line like many of the comic artists of the day. I also did a few things for Woodbridge, if I recall. Most of my collaborations were with the EC guys." (From a conversation with Frank Frazetta on 8-14-2002.)The complete story is now available for the first time. The twice-up pages, measuring approximately 23" x 14.5" overall, are all in excellent condition. The final page contains a single, beautifully conceived and rendered, craftint panel insertion. A rare find that would fit into any collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
