Sid Caesar Personal Letter
Sid Caesar Personal Letter - In the 1950’s the world of Television was ruled by one “leader”. His name was Sid Caesar, and his “Your Show Of Shows” is still considered to this day to be the most brilliant comedy ever produced on television. And what would you expect with the writing and acting talents of Caesar, as well as a group of his hand-picked young talent who got their start on his show, such as Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Carol Reiner, Imogene Coca, Howard Morris, and a very young Woody Allen! Just as Caesar held court in New York, actor Van Johnson and his wife Evie were the King and Queen of Hollywood, and were known for their hospitality. An invite to their home in Beverly Hills was the watermark of having “made it” in Hollywood. This is a letter, written by Sid Caesar, on his personal stationary, to Van and Evie, thanking them for being invited to one of their soirées. He gives them his personal phone number (an almost insanely private man, this was the ultimate compliment), and mentions as well meeting their children. It is signed “Sid”. The letter is dated February 1st, 1956, which was when Caesar was at the absolute height of his fame and fortune. It includes his original stationary envelope, which was meter postmarked in New York from his production offices. It includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson, who remembers well that visit from the insane and hysterical Sid Caesar at her home, along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
