Sicily of Olde. A Tour through Sicily and Mal
Sicily of Olde. A Tour through Sicily and Malta, in a Series of Letters to William Beckford, Esq. of Somerly in Suffolk; from P. Brydone, F.R.S. "Third edition corrected." Dublin: printed for the United Company of Book-sellers, 234 pp. N.d. but believed 1775-1776 period. Vol. 2 only, of two, this volume evidently entirely devoted to Sicily, and its content complete thusly. A fascinating compilation of observations on this evocative land, including, "Sicilian ladies," "Convent of capuchins," "Address of a Sicilian servant," "Luxury of the Sicilians in their carriages," Sicilian poetry, food, nobility, and much more. First published in 1773, this account of these then little-known islands was very successful. Enjoying eight editions in various cities in the author's lifetime, this Dublin printing is rare. Lacking boards, light foxing, else tight and very good.
