Sicily, Syracuse, c. 410 BC or somewhat later. AR Tetradrachm (17.15 g). Galloping quadriga right driven by charioteer; above, Nike flying left; in exergue, wheel. Reverse: Head left of Arethusa, hair bound with sphendone; around, dolphins swimming. Cf. Tudeer 37. Die-break on obverse. Fine / Very Fine. .

During the transitional art period, the diverse depictions of Arethusa took precedence over the normally staid quadrigas. The mint utilized the obverse dies past their prime, and flans usually display numerous cracks or irregularities. These dies, though unsigned, are likely the work of the master celators Euainetos (obverse) and Eukleidas (reverse) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
