Sicily, Syracuse. Circa 430-420 B.C. AR tetradrachm. <p>Quadriga right being driven by charioteer;above, Nike flying right, crowning horses/Head right of Artemis-Arethusa with hair bound with cord wound four times; around, four dolphins. 17.32 g. Dewing 824, SNG ANS 223, Boehringer 674. VF25 ICG, typical worn obverse (quadriga side) die. As much as we would like to consider the obverse as the "head" side (ICG decided to encapsulate this late transitional style head of Arethusa on the front), numismatists have a more scientific means for determining obverse and reverse on ancient coins. When the coin was struck, the lower, obverse (or anvil) die created a convexity of the metal, and the upper, reverse (or punch) die created a concave nature to the coin. Thus on most all issues, the boy on the dolphin type from Taras, the Artemis-Arethusa heads of Syracuse, and the Athena heads on Corinthian staters are all reverses and show concavity from being struck from the upper punch die. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
