Sicily, Syracuse. Circa 415-405 B.C. AR tetradrachm
Sicily, Syracuse. Circa 415-405 B.C. AR tetradrachm signed by the artist Eumenes on both obverse and reverse. <p>Charioteer driving quadriga left with Nike flying right crowning charioteer, signature EV below horses; in exergue, dolphin chasing fish/Head left of Artemis-Arethusa with four dolphins around, signature EV below truncation. 16.84 g. Tudeer 31, SNG ANS 262 (same dies). VF35 ICG, some porosity at lower reverse with the obverse being particularly well-detailed. Around the time this coin was struck, it was the practice for the greatest artists to sign some of their finest dies. These celators, or die engravers, showed remarkable technique through the vibrancy and action of their quadrigas and the beauty and timelessness of their Arethusa heads. Eukleidas, Euainetos, Kimon, Euthymos, Euarchides, Parmenides, Phrygillos and Eumenes were some of the artists who engraved the dies for the most beautiful of coins minted at Syracuse and other cities. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
