Sicily, Motya. 405-397 B.C. AR tetradrachm. <p>Eagle standing right, wing closed; above, Punic legend (ethnic or name of city)/Crab. 16.73 g. SNG ANS 499, cf. Jenkins (SNR 50) plate 5, 37-41 (these dies not listed). VF30 ICG, crystallization mainly confined to obverse. This very rare coin was struck in an ancient town on a small island off the northwest of Sicily, Isola di Mezzo. Motya was founded by the Phoenicians (hence the Punic ethnic) and ceased to exist in 397 B.C., when it was destroyed by Dionysios of Syracuse. The coin imitates the types of Akragas (Agrigentum in Roman times), now Agrigento, where some of the finest preserved examples of extant Greek temples may be visited, my favorite being the Temple of Hera. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
