This is a 12 gauge shell extractor that would have been made to remove the base of a shotgun shell after it separated in the chamber. This was common during the early years of paper hull construction. It only got better when shot shell construction was replaced with plastic hulls in the 1960s.
The broadsheet is advertisement for William Read & Sons of Boston, Massachusetts. This was printed during the muzzleloading shotgun period from the 1850-1860s. Their inventory was very extensive that includes British made guns as well. William Read and Sons were also suppliers of ammunition to the Union army during the Civil War. Light folding. Please see photo for details.
