Pen name of Salomon Naumovich Rabinovich, a leading Yiddish author and playwright. The musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on Sholem Aleichem's stories about Tevye the Milkman, was the first commercially successful English-language play about Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Uncommon ALS in Russian, signed “Sh. Aleichem,” one page, lightly-lined, 6.75 x 8.5, no date. Letter to Mr. Yubakovich. In full (translated): “Mr. Yubakovich requesting one copy of each short story. Address: Ilyanskaya 3, Hotel Leipzig, Apt. 2.” Beneath his signature, in Yiddish, he adds, “2nd short story—at Krinskiy’s.” In very good condition, with scattered toning, creasing, and wrinkling, professional repairs to separations along central horizontal fold, and paper loss to lower left corner. A rare literary autograph.
