Shirley Jones
Shirley Jones has donated a second phone call to be auctioned off.
They say Shirley Jones was singing before she could talk. It was a gift that lasted forever. Her very first audition on a family trip to New York convinced the two men who happened to be there that day—Richard Rogers & Oscar Hammerstein—that 18-year-old Shirley Mae Jones from Smithton, Penn. (population 667), had a future with the R&H Company. So they sent their young protégé quickly to test (along with a bevy of reigning movie ingénues) for the coveted role of “Laury” in the long-anticipated R&H movie of the hit Broadway musical “Oklahoma.” Bingo.
Bingo again when “Carousel” followed, then Meredith Willson’s classic “The Music Man,” and 36 starring movie roles thereafter.
“The First Lady of American Song” is what Bob Hope and Nancy Reagan called her. Shirley won an Academy Award for playing an old-flame prostitute in “Elmer Gantry” opposite Burt Lancaster. After that, Shirley confounded all her agents by opting to stay home and bring up her family. She later returned to acting and starred in the long-running TV series, “The Partridge Family.”
Today, at 75 and not slowing down a bit, with movie roles, Emmy nominations and a full symphony concert schedule that swings her across the land and back, it is no wonder why Shirley Jones is continually counted among the Ten Most Popular Women in America.
The winning bid for a conversation with Shirley Jones will be donated to Rising Star Outreach, a 501(c) 3 charity that provides services to people afflicted with leprosy in India and their children. Rising Star provides medical care to 34 leprosy colonies in Tamil Nadu, India, and has a school for 150 children whose parents have leprosy. Without this education, these children will be relegated to begging for money on the street to survive. Rising Star also administers a micro-loan program that has helped more than 1,000 individuals and families start their own small businesses so they can break the cycle of poverty and stop begging.
