Journals of a Voyage from Boston to San Francisco on Board the Clipper Ship 'Golden Eagle', Captain Samuel E. Fabens 1852-1853. Also: Journals of a Voyage from San Francisco to Boston byway of the Sandwich and Society Islands on Board the Clipper Ship 'Contest', Captain William E. Brewster 1853-1854, kept by Matthew Pear. 4to, 1/2 brown calf with deep orange & brown marbled bds with a Maroon leather label titled in gilt, Snuggly housed in a custom brown cloth Slipcase. Abstract logs of both voyages (much more detailed than usually found). The blind stamp of the Society of New England Antiquities on the first title page. Gift inscriptions; on the first free end paper by the author to his brother dated 1853 and another in ink from Mrs. A. J. Pear (gift of) on the verso of the FC upper corner. An excellent journal with lengthy detailed entries in a legible hand sepia ink generally on blue paper. Daily entries with many stops; Rio, Tahiti (1 month), Hawaii, etc... Quite extensive with over 70'000 words. Both the Contest and The Golden Eagle were famous Clipper Ships (American Clipper Ships & Grey Hounds of the Sea) . Both were burned by the Confederate Raider " Alaban" in 1861. Very Good+ Condition & Scarce thus.
