Shilaharas of Western Maharashtra (c.1100 —1200 AD), Anonymous and Uninscribed, Gold Gadyana, 3.95g, obv. anthropomorphic Garuda, with human face, aquiline nose and winged arms, dancing holding a snake in his hand, rev. a temple in architectural splendor, consisting of pillars, Vimana and Shikhara, surmounted by banners. The object of worship is a linga on pedestal in profile, so the temple is undoubtedly Shaivite in its affiliation. Crescent moon and disc-shaped sun also flank the structure. Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare. Although the coin is uninscribed, its Shilahara attribution is certain, as evident from the evolved iconography of the Garuda on obverse. Garuda was the dynastic emblem of the Shilaharas, who regarded themselves as the descendent of a mythical hero who saved the life of a sacrificial serpent by opting to be offered to the Garuda.
