This is a Victorian era blue cloth 1878 pattern Home Service helmet for an officer of the Sherwood Foresters. The 4 panel body consists of cork with a blue cloth covering. The plate has a large Victorian crown at the top, a laying roe deer on a blue enamel background in the center with a floral wreath around it on top of a silver Maltese cross that sits on an 8 point rayed star with a laurel wreath on the star around the cross with "SHERWOOD FORESTERS" in a silver banner on the wreath. There is a gilt spike on a 4 pronged base at the top. Two Tudor rose ear bosses suspend the gilt velvet backed chin chain. The peaks are lined in green skived leather. There is a natural skived leather sweat band and a "G. E. CARRINGTON" label.

Condition: Fine, the cloth shows some minor wear. The gilt components show moderate wear with a generally bright appearance. The silver components have a dark aged patina. The chin chain has been resewn and lengthened with double linked chains. The lining and interior are excellent.
