Shemp Howard (The Three Stooges) Personal Hand-written Idea Notebook
Shemp Howard (The Three Stooges) Personal Hand-written Idea Notebook Rarely do we have the chance to delve into the mind of a creative genius. And one of the greatest was Shemp Howard, said to be the "father of the Three Stooges". The oldest of the "Horwitz" brothers, Shemp fell in love with vaudeville at an early age, and decided showbiz was going to be his calling. From the time he could write, he began to scribble ideas for jokes, skits, gags, stories, and monologues on whatever paper he could find. With his brother Moe, he began to work the vaudeville circuit, until 1922 when they meet fellow former school mate Ted Healy, and with Larry Fine began a successful act. Hollywood soon discovered Shemp and he starred in some of the great classic comedies. It was in his independent days that he saw that his fellow Stooges didn't need Ted, who had become an absolute tyrant, and they went on their own. The rest is history. From his long-time wife Babe's personal collection this is Shemp's personal "idea notebook" that he carried with him everywhere. It is filled with his hand-written notes of his jokes, one-lines, observations, sight gags, stories, thoughts (many of which are surprisingly "X" rated!), play dates, and all sorts of lists and accountings. He also used the notebook to hold his ever growing scraps of what he called "creative confetti", that included clippings he would take of jokes, cartoons and articles from various magazines and newspapers, as well as more of his own ideas he had written on whatever paper was available. Also included are notes and addresses from other famous stars of the time. A truly unique one-of-a-kind collectable. Also included is a cancelled check from Bank of America from Shemp's account, signed by Shemp in 1952. The notebook comes with a Letter of Provenience from Stooge expert and collector Dan Lange. (Notebook is 4"x6").
