Shemp Howard Signed Pianatte Contract & Lawyer's Letter
Shemp Howard Signed Pianatte Contract & Lawyer's Letter All three Howard brothers (Moe, Shemp and Curly) were musical. This was evident in their many famous novelty songs including the beloved "Swinging the Alphabet" ("B-A-bay, B-E-bee, B-I-bicky-bi, B-O-bo"). Shemp especially loved to concoct these kinds of tongue-twisters for his own act. This is an original contract for Shemp Howard to purchase an art deco "Pianatte", a minipiano which was all the range in the 1930's and very well suited to the small apartments in New York where artists like to live. On this piano, he created some of his most famous original creations. Shemp's creative mind was forever on full alert. His wife said he not only talked in his sleep, but laughed as well! No scrap of paper was safe for his ever-read pen as he was continually writing down new ideas. This Shemp signed contract for the purchase of the "Pianatte" also has various ideas and lyrics for songs written on the back by Shemp at the time of the purchase. Also included is the original letter written by Shemp's lawyer to him about his claim against his brother Curly's estate. This was an extremely emotional situation where Shemp was forced to sue his beloved brother's Estate to collect on unpaid depts. Curly was known as being extremely generous, and therefore was always out of cash, and went to his oldest brother for "loans" on numerous occasions. After his death, Shemp was forced to retain a lawyer to get the balance back. A great piece of history. `
