Sheldon Mayer was the child prodigy of the comics industry. In 1935, he did some of the first original material to be published in comic books, and he was instrumental in getting Superman published. As an editor for All-American Comics, Mayer helped mold the characters of the Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman. In 1941, Mayer and Gardner Fox co-created the Justice Society of America, the first super-hero team, and thus, laid the foundation for DC's super-hero universe. Later, as a DC editor, Shelly guided the new talent. Industry legends such as Joe Kubert, Robert Kanigher, Carmine Infantino, Alex Toth, Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox, and many others, received their early assignments from Mayer. Each had their work mercilessly critiqued by him and they all credited this as instrumental in transforming them into some of the top comics creators ever. But Shelly's greatest love was his cartooning; among his best creations were Scribbly, boy cartoonist, and Sugar and Spike.
