Sheila Fell. An oil painting on canvas, "Two people on the shore", painted by Sheila Fell at Allonby, Cumberland 1966, 10ins. x 11.75ins., in oak frame. Provenance when Sheila Fell was composing the painting she was accompanied by L.S. Lowry her friend and fellow artist, as Sheila Fell and L.S. Lowry stood on the shore a man with a dog appeared and according to Sheila Fell, Lowry stated that he would go down and chat to the gentleman and she could place them both in the picture. Lowry requested that the figures not be centralised and for the picture not to be too dark and sombre. The picture was completed not by brush but scalpel to give the sea greater depth. In 1974 the current owner of the painting met Sheila Fell at Crosscanonby where she was sketching a youth digging potatoes by a tractor and the vendor suggested that a photograph might be helpful to remember the scene and cloud formation. Sheila Fell agreed and the vendor took a photograph which he delivered to her at home. It was at that time that the painting illustrated was purchased by the vendor (see illustration).
