Exceptionally rare! Dateline Star City, Humboldt Co., N.T. Dec. 10th, 1864 (just after statehood was established). Issued to superintendent Thomas McDonald for $31.22. Signed by McDonald. 3.75 x 8.25" Damaged: folds, tape repaired separations, and pieces missing out of two corners. The Sheba was the most prominent mine in Star City, which may explain the ornate design of this corporate draft. The mine was discovered in 1861, and Star City was born. Just eight years later, after producing more than $5 million in silver, the Sheba ran out of ore and shut down. An 1871 account read "So sudden was its decline that the daily mail, the express office and the telegraph office are all in operation yet, though the entire population consists of a single family."
